ClipClip is frequently using the Internet. Why? How do I block it?

Hello,

- When you disabled the "Automatically check for updates" option, the app will not check the updates.
- When you disabled the "Provide anonymous usage information" option, the app will not send information to the Google Analytics website. We will use this information to improve the ClipClip app. For example, this information contains which type of clips (TEXT, CSV, HTML, etc.) is most used.

Regarding your question, you are right, the ClipClip app sends a signal about the running app.
This feature was added recently, so there is no information about it in the "ClipClip User Manual" document.
Do not worry about it. The signal contains just a fixed app key that is not private information. This key is the same for all installed ClipClip apps - "fc1022387d7eb195b3b6cbbadf9ba2069ee89303".
To send this signal, the ClipClip app uses this technology:
https://github.com/Countly/countly-server

Here is a screenshot of these ClipClip requests:

Unfortunately, at this moment, sending this signal cannot be disabled from the ClipClip UI or settings because it is running only in the test mode and it has not been implemented completely yet.

Thanks for this information.

I would think unchecking 'Provide anonymous usage information' would have blocked those, but for now, if it is using just that one URL, I can block that with the HOSTS file

I just recently found and installed ClipClip on my win7 PC. I use a firewall program called TinyWall. It blocks internet access from all programs, as well windows (it keeps Win10 PC from allowing auto updates as well kills Edge). I saw the program complaining about internet access soon after it was installed, as TinyWall was blocking it from access. It can be a pain at times, when some program quits working after it does an update, but I've gotten used to checking to see that I need to update the access in tinywall.

In general I hate programs that communicate without permission.

Hello,
You are right. Such behavior may be wrong for an app that is already a complete software product.
But at this moment, the ClipClip app is being tested by users since it is just a beta version. The ClipClip app sends just a fixed app key that is not private information. This key is the same for all installed ClipClip apps - "fc1022387d7eb195b3b6cbbadf9ba2069ee89303". For example, if we will know where (countries) are installed many ClipClip apps, we will add the language of this country as the app UI language.

Why do you think this is a beta?

I don't see anything on https://clipclip.com/ that warns users not to download the software because it may be buggy and cause them to loose data (or is a beta).

Similarly, there is nothing at https://clipclip.com/whats-new/ warning them about this.

I think you should respect your users options and preferences and not hide behind excuses.
