ClipClip Removes Pinned Clips Upon Restart

Hi,

I started using ClipClip a few weeks ago and like it so far. However, I've come across an annoying problem I can't seem to fix.

Every time I reboot my computer, most or all of my Pinned Clips disappear. I re-add them and can use them during that session, but they'll disappear after another reboot. 

This is obviously frustrating, as having to re-add pinned clips I use regularly is a waste of time.

I see that this was addressed about 10 months ago in another support thread. However, I'm using the latest version of ClipClip (2.1.3069) and this is still an issue. I've also made sure that I have Settings > General > Auto-save last clips on exit enabled. I tried disabling that option, saving, then re-enabling it, and the issue still persists.

I'd love to fix this so I can use pinned clips properly. Thank you!

after been annoyed for weeks, I finally started searching for this issue that pinned clips disappear and now I read here that this is by design? You can't be serious!

I agree, most clips are disposable and will never be used again, I could probably lower the number of stored clips to 20 or even 10 and wouldn't lose any functionality but pinned clips are not, these are elements, formulas etc. that I use multiple times a day (or at least think I do),

So if I do a particularly intense copy/paste session in Excel, you're saying all my pinned clips will disappear? So when will this be fixed/changed? This goes completely counter to the idea of pinning something.

item ins %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Vitzo\ClipClip\Favorite Clips should never be deleted automatically. Can you name the version where this will be changed? Or when it will be released?

As Ben, I have now moved them to a separate folder, but this isn't ideal, as having a separate hotkey for pinned clips is quite handy.

Edit: Just saw your tag-line "never lose another clip"...not gonna lie, that hurt a little 😂

Hey Troik, after the discussion below, I figured out the intended design here and found a way to keep pinned clips from being removed automatically.

When you want to pin something (for good), don't right-click an item in the Latest Clips and choose to pin it, or it will disappear before long.

Instead, create a new folder in your Saved Clips (I called it Pinned Clips), then drag and drop the clips you want to save permanently from Latest Clips into your new list. From there, open your new list, right-click the clips you want to pin, and choose to pin them from here.

Doing so will keep them in the quick access menu when you hit the paste shortcut; they will not be deleted upon restart or over time. It seems that where you pin the clip from is important.

In my opinion this is poor design, but it's not too hard to use this workaround, and it keeps you from having to dive into a few folders every time you want to recall a pinned clip.

Many months ago, the latest clips could not be "pinned".
After that, I don't remember whose this idea was, we added the "Pin clip" menu item to the context menu of the latest clips.
The problem is that the latest clips are temporary data - new clips are created, old ones are removed from the collection.
This also affects the pinned latest clips - if the target latest clip is deleted from the Latest Clips folder as the last clip in this collection, its "shortcut" is automatically removed from the "Pinned Clips" folder.
We already discussed a scenario when the latest "pinned" clips will not be automatically removed from the Latest Clips collection when they are at the bottom and new clips are created (added to this collection) because of quantitative limitation.
In this case, let's look at an example, if there is a limit of 10 latest clips (in the FREE version), and 10 latest clips are pinned, the ClipClip will not create new latest clips - copied data will be ignored.
The basic idea of the "Pinned Clips" was as follows:
To avoid searching frequently used clips in the Paste Menu (CTRL+SHIFT+V) if these clips are placed too deep in the folder hierarchy since this takes a lot of time.
The latest clips are placed on the first window of the Paste Menu. So access to them is very fast in any case.
Since the Paste Menu was redesigned, and the latest clips and pinned clips are placed together on the Paste menu, there is no logic to pin the latest clips because "latest" and "pinned" clips are placed on the same place so the access to them is the same (access time).
If some latest clips are necessary for the users to use them in the future, they can be moved into saved folders and after that, they can be pinned. Look at the example: https://i.imgur.com/7gqLIQr.gif
These actions take a few seconds by using Drag-and-Drop operations. Many users use this way.
At the current moment, in the local project, we have removed the "Pin clip" command from the context menu of the latest clips to avoid any confusion.
Most likely, you will get these corrections with new updates.
In addition, we will discuss this scenario with your managers. Maybe, some new ideas will be approved and implemented.

@Ben that was really helpful, thank you for taking the time to pass on your findings.

@Support I understand your history where this came from and how we ended up here. If a free version only has 10 clips, I agree in this scenario pinning clips eat into the clips you have available. I would suggest to simply remove pinning clips from the free version, as it makes little sense in that scenario as you explained and the core functionality to test is still there..

For now I will do as Ben suggested and remove my pinned clips, copy/create them again and move them to a "saved clips" folder, which I will then pin again in hopes of them never being removed again.

Thanks again all for your help, I work in software support myself and am very used in using workarounds for all kinds of stuff, I don't mind that much, it's way less frustrating now that I know the software isn't broken, which is what it felt like when pinned clips disappeared on me for no apparent reason.

Let's separate clips to understand our idea:
- There are the latest clips - they are created as soon as you have copied something. Most of the newly created clips are garbage, they will never be used. But in any case, they fill the Latest Clips collection and displace the previous latest clips that you may need. Some clips should be edited before their usage or saving.
NOTE: We view the latest clips as workflow material that can be used right now or can be (edited and ) saved as saved clips for future. This "material" is always changed - new clips are created, the old ones are removed. Therefore, it is a good idea to create saved clips from the latest ones to avoid losing them.

You are using the ClipClip version that allows using 1000 latest clips (as PRO version). Maybe, sometimes, this is a good idea to pin some latest clips.
But... The ClipClip app will be implemented in several versions (FREE, PRO, etc.). The FREE version allows keeping just several latest clips at this moment. In this case, there is no logic to pin the latest clips since if these clips will not be removed from the Latest Clips folder, there will be no place to add new ones.

In fact, there is no reason to pin the latest clips.
The latest clips can be pinned for a small time period since these clips are not permanent. When a new latest clip is created on the top, the last one is removed from the collection when the limit is reached (see the Configuration window - Content tab).
This feature - Pinned Clips - was implemented to pin saved clips that are placed very deep in the folder hierarchy.
So, this helps avoid searching for such clips in the Paste Menu between many dropdowns.
Here is some additional information about pinned clips:
All clips in the ClipClip app are real files. When you pinned some clip/file, the ClipClip app creates a new shortcut for this file. This shortcut is loaded in the ClipClip app as the pinned clip. As you know, in the Windows OS, the shortcut contains the path of the target file. If the target file is renamed/moved/deleted, the shortcut does not work. The same behavior is inherited in the ClipClip.
The pinned clips are placed in this folder:
C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Vitzo\ClipClip\Favorite Clips

NOTE: Pinned clip (Pinned Clips folder) and the clip that was pinned (any original clip) are two separate clips/files.

This behavior was implemented to simulate the work of the Windows Explorer and avoid using any Databases.
You can delete any pinned clip and this action does not affect the original clip that was pinned. If you delete the original clip that is already pinned, both (pinned and original clips) are deleted from the ClipClip app.

Here are several scenarios when the pinned clips will be deleted automatically:
1) When you clear "Pinned Clips" folder;
2) When you clear a saved folder that contains pinned clips (in fact, the real target files);
3) When you delete a saved folder that contains pinned clips (in fact, the real target files);
4) When you renamed the saved folder that contains pinned clips (target files);
5) When a pinned clip (in fact, the real target file) was deleted - from the ClipClip app or by using Windows Explorer;
6) When a pinned clip (in fact, the real target file) was renamed - in the ClipClip app or by using Windows Explorer;

We hope this information will be useful to you.

NOTE: In later versions, we will change the logic of the last pinned clips.

I understand what you mean that removing the original clips will delete the pinned clips. But I've never manually cleared the Pinned Clips folder or deleted any files in the ClipClip folder in File Explorer.

So you're saying that if my clip limit is set to 100, once the clips I've pinned are bumped off that list of 100, the pinned clips will be removed too? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Why don't pinned clips just stay saved like the items under Saved Clips do?

For the time being, I've created a "Pinned Clips" folder under Saved Clips, so I don't lose my most-used clips. But this is significantly clunkier than using actual pinned clips, as it requires mousing through two additional menus. It's workable, but definitely slower.

I used Ditto clipboard manager before trying ClipClip. In that tool, when you pin a clip, it stays at the top of your list forever. This makes a lot more sense to me, as those important clips will always be at the top and easy to access.
